An emergency medical technician has been suspended after making racist comments during a podcast.
35-year-old Alex McNabb compared black female patients to shaved gorillas and described his ‘immense satisfaction’ at ‘stabbing’ an African American boy with a needle.
McNabb went under the codename Dr. Narcan when featuring on the podcast, which was called The Daily Shoah, a title that mocks the Holocaust, even though he claims he doesn’t discriminate.
The EMT from Patrick County, Virginia, then withdrew his discriminatory comments and claimed they were just a ‘work of fiction,’ in a Twitter post.
But McNabb’s remarks sparked a debate over whether he should be allowed to handle patients because of the views he has on the show. But McNabb wrote in another tweet that he’s under a ‘character assassination attempt.’
The 35-year-old also referred to black men as ‘dindus’, which incorporate the words ‘didn’t and ‘do’ and refers to people of color who said they are not treated well by the American justice system.
During a podcast from 2016, he referenced a call out where he was sent to a ‘black apartment complex’, which McNabb said medics call ‘Ebola Alley.’
McNabb also referred to a black female patient and called her a ‘shaved Harambe’, which is the gorilla who was killed after grabbing a child who had fallen into his enclosure.
A spokesperson said that the EMT worker’s conduct is under formal investigation and he is on unpaid leave.
Lock Boyce, the board of supervisors’ chairman of Patrick County, said: “This individual should never be involved in patient care at any level.”
“Not as a physician, a nurse, an EMT. Not anywhere. The rural, overwhelmingly white county in the Blue Ridge Mountains has a contract with McNabb’s employers.”
Boyce also said he will fight for McNabb to get fired from his job and if he isn’t, he will make sure that all funds paid to JEB are suspended in protest.
JEB Stuard Volunteer Rescue Squad, McNabb’s employer, said they are not yet firing him as they do not want to be sued for wrongful termination.
