Eccentric billionaire Elon Musk said that he will not get the Covid-19 vaccine even if it becomes available because he and his family are not vulnerable to the global pandemic.
The 49 year old CEO of Tesla also defended his decision of keeping Tesla factories open during the pandemic.
Musk shared his thoughts in the podcast “Sway”, hosted by New York Times journalist Kara Swisher. He said he also had no plans to get his family vaccinated for the same reason that they are not in danger from the virus.
Never one to shy away from controversy, Musk criticized what he described as irrational acts such as imposing mandatory lockdowns in order to curb the rate of infections. He said that this particular virus is one that is highly contagious but with minimum lethality.
Thus, according to his logic, the best way to handle the pandemic would be to let the businesses be open while ensuring that the vulnerable are sent to quarantine. Musk seemed rather oblivious to the fact that more than 200,000 Americans have died from this virus.
Musk said he himself had been showing up for work despite the pandemic, saying that his other company – SpaceX – managed to send people to space during the lockdowns. He criticized California’s Alameda County which mandated Tesla factories to be closed, calling it overzealous.
When Swisher pointed out that his views on the global pandemic seemed contradictory to his other visions such as space exploration and green energy, Musk drily replied that everyone eventually dies.
The billionaire continued by saying that a full-on lockdown was never the solution to the pandemic. He went so far as to say that he has lost faith in humanity because it laid bare the irrationality that is so strong within everyone.
When the podcast host pushed the CEO to consider the situation from the worker’s perspective, Musk tabled the question and said he did not want to talk about Covid-19 anymore.
Musk argued that although he has not paid much attention to the global pandemic, he and his company was still focused on other ways in which it can aid and develop humanity.
