Elliot Page has spoken out and revealed that he underwent top surgery that saw his breasts removed.
As the 34-year-old The Umbrella Academy star, who came out as non-binary and transgender back in December, explained, he wanted to be a boy ever since he was just nine years old.
Elliot opened up about his decades-long struggles with his gender identity in an interview with TIME as he said he would ask his mother if he could one day become a boy.
“I became a professional actor at the age of 10 and pursuing that passion came with a difficult compromise. Of course, I had to look a certain way,” Elliot says.
While the actor claimed that his mother would encourage him to behave like a girl thinking she’s doing what’s best for her child, he admitted that she now fully supports his transition.
“She wants me to be who I am and supports me fully. It is a testament to how people really change,” Elliot added.
Speaking of his transition, Elliot went on to reveal that he took a major step forward in achieving his dreams as he decided to get rid of his breasts by undergoing top surgery before coming out publicly.
As the 34-year-old insisted, he was recovering from the procedure in December, the same time he decided to announce his transition to the world.
According to the Juno star, the surgery “completely transformed his life,” whereas he now feels better in his own body.
“I just never recognized myself. For a long time I could not even look at a photo of myself,” Elliot said. “[I didn’t know] how to explain to people that even though [I was] an actor, just putting on a T-shirt cut for a woman would make me so unwell.”
