An elderly woman suffered severe injuries after was attacked by a trained American Pit Bull Terrier for about thirty minutes.
It took five people working in a nearby factory to save the 74-year-old woman who was mauled by the dog ‘like a lion dragging an antelope.’
According to reports, Daniel Cleary had only owned the 25kg pitbull for a week when it pulled the woman’s coat and she could not escape.
The incident happened in woodland off Kirk Lane, Yeadon, near Leeds on August 27, 2019.
After hearing Mary’s ‘chilling’ screams, the workers immediately ran to the park to remove the animal from her.
She suffered serious injuries, including muscle damage and loss of a finger. Without the help of the five workers, she could’ve been killed.
Mary’s partner, 72-year-old Trevor Cornwell, said: “The injuries it caused are horrific, not like anything I have ever seen from a dog attack.
“The agony she has been through and trauma of that will always stay with her, I’m just doing my best to look after her, it’s a miracle she’s still here.”
The dog’s owner, Cleary, was imprisoned for two years and seven months. According to Daily Mail, the 32-year-old had previously been banned from owning an animal for ten years because of neglect.
Prosecutor Carmel Pearson said the workers managed to release the dog’s grip on the woman by hitting it with a metal pole.
One of the men was bitten during the incident but he said that ‘he did not initially feel it as he was so intent on rescuing her.’
Mary lost a finger and suffered muscle damage because of the attack. Ashe also needed a blood transfusion, skin graft, and stitches for a bite to her right cheek.
In a victim statement, Mary said she loves dogs and she doesn’t want the pit bull to be euthanized.
