This is a shocking moment an elderly woman lost control of her Mercedes-Benz SUV and smashed through the glass entrance of an emergency room, injuring four people and killing one.
75-year-old Mary Clayton had driven herself to the hospital when she suddenly lost control of her vehicle, accidentally taking the life of 55-year-old Kimberly Hall and injuring four others.
Surveillance footage shows nurses and patients running for their lives as Clayton’s vehicle smashed through the waiting area.
One woman, Kailyn Bailey, was seen dashing into a door while another was left stuck on the floor.
In an interview with WSBTV, 29-year-old Bailey said: “I remember running from the red SUV. Once I got up to run into the entrance of the hospital, that is when Mrs. Clayton gunned and hit me on the right side.
“I’m extremely hurt by all of this. My family is hurt. Why wasn’t I protected at an emergency room?”
She added: “I’m just wondering how do you drive through a hospital, critically injure me, kill one person, but yet you’re allowed to be home, living your life? Every day is a struggle for that family. Every day is a struggle for me and my family.”
Bailey and her lawyer, Jane Lamberti, also say that the hospital failed to build safety post in front of the entrance.
“Secured posts that provide a secured space between pedestrians and an ER and car traffic going through,” Lamberti stated.
“If you look at the video, Piedmont does not have any of these security bollards or posts.”
When asked by the news outlet as to why the elderly woman was not charged, police said the investigation is still ongoing.
