An elderly man was caught on camera getting publicly shamed after taking a walk amid the draconian Covid-19 lockdown in China.
The incident reportedly took place in Shijiazhuang, China, where the local authorities banned its 11 million residents from leaving their homes on January 8
The draconian lockdown comes as the region is fighting a fresh Covid-19 outbreak and a surge of local coronavirus infections.
According to the reports, the city of 11 million residents responded to the new cases by banning everyone from leaving their homes for all but emergency reasons.
In the footage that has been circulating the internet, an elderly resident is seen getting reprimanded by local officers who tie him to a tree for taking a walk.
Reprimanding the elderly man for flouting lockdown and leaving his home during a “severe situation,” one of the officials tells the officers to tie the man tightly.
The authenticity of the footage was later confirmed by the Gaocheng District Cyberspace Administration. While a spokesperson told Xuanwo Video that the elderly man was tied to a tree, they refused to comment on the situation.
It is not clear how long the senior was subjected to public shaming.
Meanwhile, the Shijiazhuang authorities have begun with mass testing of the residents in a bid to stop the spreading of the virus.
The capital of the Hebei province also started building a large quarantine camp that will reportedly serve as a temporary home to close contacts of confirmed coronavirus patients.
As reported by CNN, the camp will be able to house over 4,000 people, whereas thousands of construction workers worked tirelessly to finish the first stage in just six days.
While the quarantined residents’ movement will be limited within the camp, each of the 194-square-foot rooms will feature a bed, a TV, Wi-Fi, and an ensuite toilet and bathroom.
