An 89-year-old German and his 85-year-old Danish girlfriend have been meeting at their countries’ closed border amid the COVID-19 lockdown.
Inga Rasmussen from Denmark and Karsten Tuchsen Hansen from Germany have been together for two years. But because of coronavirus crisis, they become separated from each other.
But the two lovebirds decided to meet daily at the border to sit down and have a cup of coffee or some biscuits.
They would normally kiss and hug but because of social-distancing rules, the two have to be content enjoying their drinks and heart-to-heart conversations.
According to Deutsche Welle, the couple hope that once strict restrictions are lifted, they may be allowed to travel again.
The couple rose to fame after a local mayor saw them.
Henrik Fredsen, Mayor of Tonder, said: “On today’s bike ride I laid the way past Møllehus border. This is where I met these two lovely people. She, 85 years old and lives in Gallehus. He, 89 years old and lives in Süderlügum. They’ve gotten to know each other at a late age and usually visit each other every day.
“Now they meet halfway at the blocked border. Let us stand together during this difficult time and find solutions together.”
One internet user commented: “Funny. When I was in Berlin I met a 70 year old German lady from Munster and her Danish boyfriend same age from Denmark. Seems to be a few German / Danish love affairs among the elderly.”
Another wrote: “Imagine the public outcry if that happened in the uk. Police would scold them both for loitering and fine them for making non-essential journeys.”
A third added: “It’s nice to read about something positive at this time. Good for them.”
