Making an arrest is often a dangerous affair. A cop doesn’t know if the person being arrested will become violent, pull out a weapon, or have friends ready to pounce on a hapless officer. So it’s understandable that cops can be high-strung and jumpy during those situations.
However, like in most things, context is important. But an El Paso police officer forgot that little detail when he decided to draw his gun on a group of unarmed children as he was making an arrest. Too bad for the police officer because one of the people on the scene managed to take a video of the incident on his phone.
The police were responding to a report of criminal trespassing at a recreation center. As they were cuffing a young man, the children were crowding the arresting officer and shouting taunts at him.
That’s when the officer pulled out his gun and pointed it at the children while shouting at them to get back. The gun had the intended effect of making them draw away but they continued shouting.
The cop’s partner enters the scene and both of them haul their detainee to the car.
The women in the area, who are supposedly the mothers of some of those children, also chide the cops for their behavior. But what the arresting officer did was to pull out his baton and approach them menacingly, even going so far as to push one of the women back.
The officer and the woman get into a shouting match with the woman yelling that he shouldn’t push nor touch her while the officer yelled back for her to back off.
As he’s walking back to the patrol car, the cop notices the boy who’s filming and grabs his wrist. The boy immediately hands the phone off to his mother while yelling, “What are you doing? I’m just recording!” But the officer proceeds to cuff him anyway.
The mother of the just arrested boy shouts, “Learn to do your job right!” That’s when the officer moves to grab her but the whole screen shakes as she runs away and shouts, “F**k you!”
Chillingly, the officer replies, “I know where you live!”
This doesn’t deter the crowd with one kid even standing up to the officer and saying, “You’re pulling a gun on a little kid?”
The officer in question has been put on desk duty as the incident is investigated although the police department insists that the arrests were justified.
But no matter how one looks at it, that man doesn’t deserve to be in the police force. Police are supposed to be trained to respond according to the threat that’s confronting them. Even if he felt threatened by their crowding him in, that is no justification for pulling a gun on a group of unarmed children.
With his size advantage, he could easily have taken care of the children with his bare hands alone.
What happens next remains to be seen.
