At least eight people died and multiple others were injured after a man with an assault rifle went on a shooting spree at a FedEx warehouse near Indianapolis Airport.
Police officers responded to reports of an ‘active shooter incident’ on Thursday night and discovered ‘multiple victims’ with gunshot wounds.
A male witness said he saw a “man with a sub-machine gun or automatic rifle” firing in the open.
“I saw a man with a sub-machine gun of some sort, an automatic rifle, and he was firing in the open. I immediately ducked down and got scared,” the witness said.
Police said that at least four people were hospitalized and two received treatment at the scene.
“This is very heartbreaking,” said Indianapolis Metropolitan Department (IMPD) Officer Genae Cook hours after the incident.
“We have located eight people at the scene with injuries consistent to gunshot wounds. Those eight were pronounced deceased at the scene,” Cook continued.
“This is a tragedy.”
The shooter reportedly shot himself after the rampage. Police found his body at 11:23 pm local time.
Two other witnesses said they saw the gunman getting the weapon from the trunk of his vehicle. One said they heard ten shots while another said they saw a body on the ground.
At around 2:30 am, more than 100 people were anxiously waiting in a nearby hotel for news about their loved ones working in the company.
FedEx described the incident as ‘tragic’ in a statement, saying: “We are aware of the tragic shooting at our FedEx Ground facility near the Indianapolis airport. Safety is our top priority, and our thoughts are with all those who are affected. We are working to gather more information and are cooperating with investigating authorities.”
