Tesla CEO and founder of SpaceX, Elon Musk, has been invited by a top Egyptian official to visit the Great Pyramids after the billionaire tweeted an old conspiracy theory that the magnificent creations were built by aliens.
Elon Musk wrote on Twitter: “Aliens built the pyramids obv.” His tweet received over 500,000 likes and reshared more than 87,000 times.
Musk’s tweet prompted a reply from Rania al-Mashat, the Minister of International Cooperation of Egypt.
“I follow your work with a lot of admiration,” al-Mashat wrote on Twitter. “I invite you & Space X to explore the writings about how the pyramids were built and also to check out the tombs of the pyramid builders. Mr. Musk, we are waiting for you.”
But the billionaire appeared to take the claim back in another post by sharing an article describing how the Great pyramids were more likely constructed by people living in an Egyptian settlement.
He wrote: “This BBC article provides a sensible summary for how it was done. The Private Lives of the Pyramid-builders.”
But Musk, who is also known for sharing erratic Twitter posts, could not shake off his original tweet about extraterrestrials.
Zahi Hawass, an Egyptian archeologist, shared a video response debunking the claim aliens built the pyramids.
“This is a response from Zahi Hawass to American billionaire Elon Must,” Hawass posted on Facebook, according to Egypt Today.
The archeologist wrote: “What you said about the pyramids is completely hallucination, the pyramids are built by Egyptians.
“I found the tombs of the pyramids builders that tell everyone that the builders of the pyramids are Egyptians and they were not slaves.”
While Egyptians built the great pyramids thousands of years ago, some conspiracy theories claim that aliens played a role in the construction.
