Recently Dutch street artists Jan Is De Man and Deef Feed have done a remarkable job of painting a huge trompe l’oeil mural on a three-story apartment building in Utrecht, Netherlands.
The three-story building was converted into a multi-level bookshelf contained with a selection of residents’ favorite books by these two artists, in addition to a few made-up titles featuring their own names.
It was Jan Is De Man’s most amazing gift to the neighborhood. He was asked by the people living in that apartment for a mural. He was let free to paint anything that can bring smile on peoples’ faces and could connect local communities together. His wanted to create a project with the involvement of the people.
According to Jan Is De Man, the hardest segments was to get to the primary idea, which seems the best fit to the wall as well as the community. As soon as the right idea clicked his mind, the difficult part was over.
So he spent more time in planning the mural with visual illusion best fits the wall. He studied the canvas for a while and came up with the idea of a l’oeil mural.
Their part of the idea was to involve the neighborhood too so he welcomed people with all the ages, color and languages to tell their favorite books in order to get engaged in the project. The only rule he set up was: No religious or political books allowed.
Now that the mural is exhibited, it has become a source of bringing smiles to the peoples’ faces, stopping by for an artistic selfie and also to the community. As the neighborhood living there are from different cultures and languages, the mural is becoming the reason to bring them closer.
