Marina Tilby, aged 26, was repeatedly seen hurling and catching her child Darian when she went clubbing at the Sea Horse Inn in New Quay with her sister. She then took him with her to a caravan driven by two men whom she had just met that night.

As heard in Swansea Crown Court, the baby was found unresponsive with blood in the mouth, while lying beside Tilby early in the morning of 31st March 2017, after a night full of drinking.

It was heard that in the court that Marina’s system came into the bedroom and saw the defendant lying face-down on top of the baby.

She somehow managed to take the infant out from below Marina and saw blood was coming out from the nose of the baby.

Marina was so high that she couldn’t be woken up from her sleep by her sister. Her sister was also there at the caravan.

Marina could not be woken up for one hour and fifteen minutes, and in the meantime, the baby was taken to the Bronglais hospital where he died later.

Catherine Richards, the prosecutor, said that Marina had fallen drunkenly asleep over her baby, and the baby had suffered a heart attack because of that.

However, medical evidence could not conclude that the death was due to asphyxiation or if it was sudden infant death syndrome.

Dyfed Thomas, the defendant, said that Marina was grieving due to the absence of the baby’s father and the detachment from her own family and that depression led to the incident that occurred.

Paul Thomas, the judge on the case, branded it as an incident of extreme maternal carelessness and strongly criticized Marina for the deliberate negligence of the baby, whereas it is the responsibility of a mother to ensure the safety and care of her child.

He further mentioned that it could never be known if the child could have been saved if the alarm had been raised earlier.
