A 25-year-old drunk driver was arrested after a deadly crash which left a man dead.
Amanda Kosal was driving a pick-up northbound on Beech Daly Road near Plymouth Road.
The 25-year-old crossed the center line and an SUV head-on, leaving 31-year-old, Jerome Zirker dead.
Zirker was in the vehicle with his fiancé, Brittany Johnson, who was left badly injured but survived.
Luckily, he left his five children at his mother’s house. Brittany said:
“Luckily, they were at grandma’s house or it would have been all of us,”
Kosal pleaded guilty and cried in court. However, her family was seen laughing while Zirker’s family revealed how their lives have changed after the deadly crash.
Judge Qiana Lillard kicked two of her family members out of the room after she caught them laughing.
While Zirker’s family was reading their impact statement, Judge Qiana Lillard interrupted them and slammed the drunk driver’s family.
“Whoever can sit here at a tragic moment like this and laugh and smile when somebody has lost a family member … in the entire time that Mr. Zirker’s sister was speaking, that clown — and that’s what I am going to call him, a clown — was sitting there smiling and laughing,” said Lillard.
Then, she pointed at Kosal’s mother, Donna and said: “And you can go, too. Because if you don’t know how to act, you can go to jail. So leave.”
“This is a court of law, and these are very serious matters. I understand you all are very upset because your loved one is going to prison — but guess what? She’s going to prison for the choices that she made.”
“These people are here grieving, saddened because a senseless act took away their loved one, and you’re sitting here acting like it’s a joke?”
“Not in Courtroom 502. Not today and not any other day,” the judge said.
Lillard then sentenced Donna Kosal to 93 days in Wayne County Jail for criminal contempt.
Later, Donna apologized and her sentence reduced to a single day.
The drunk driver, Amanda Kosal was sentenced to three to 15 years in prison.
