The delivery driver was making a delivery at a home in Purfleet, Essex in his 7.5-tonne Mercedes Atego box van.
Two men tried to steal the 7.5-tonne Mercedes Atego box van and when the delivery man noticed, he chased the thieves and clung onto the outside of the van.
The delivery man fell under its wheels while trying to stop the thieves from stealing his van and ran over by them.
He was rushed to the Royal London Hospital and suffered multiple injuries.
A witness, who lives nearby, told DailyMail: “I was working in the garden when I heard a lot of shouting. I didn’t think anything of it until I heard the police sirens and saw a man lying in the street.”
“I ended up asking residents who weren’t squeamish to help hold up blankets around the man to give the paramedics some privacy as they worked on him in the middle of the road.”
“They were doing some sort of procedure on him and then rushed him off in the air ambulance.”
The two men have been arrested by police in connection with the attempted van theft and on suspicion of attempted murder.
An Essex Police spokesman said: “The men, aged 26 and 28 and both from Purfleet, were arrested in Grays at about 2am today, Wednesday, July 10. They were arrested on suspicion of attempted murder.”
“Detectives and road policing officers are still seeking witnesses after an incident at Wood Avenue, Purfleet at about 12.20pm on Tuesday, July 9, in which a van driver was run over while trying to stop two men from stealing his vehicle.”
The delivery driver, who is in his 50s, suffered multiple injuries and is critical at Royal London Hospital.
