Delivery Driver Refused To Give Grandmother A Bottle Of Alcohol Because She Had No ID

When Carl Johnston purchased a jigsaw and a bottle of Harveys Bristol Cream Sherry online for gran Louise Wilkinson, he didn’t expect the Amazon delivery driver to cause some problems.

Johnston arranged for the booze to be delivered to the 92-year-old gran’s house but the delivery driver asked the woman for ID.

Louise Wilkinson explained that she didn’t have a passport or driving license but insisted that she was over 18. For some reasons, the driver refused to give her the bottle.

The driver returned the next day and this time, gran showed him her buss pass which had a photo of her on it.

However, he still didn’t want to give the sherry to Louise, who has three children and four grandchildren.

“She is clearly old enough to drink and the second time she did have photo ID, but a bus pass isn’t on Amazon’s list of accepted identifications,” Carl told The Sun.

“I can understand that if you are lucky enough to look around 18 you should have to show ID. But my gran is 92. No-one could be in any doubt that she’s old enough to drink.

“It just seems crazy. Obviously they have to be careful about selling alcohol online and have to make sure only people over 18 buy it.”

He added: “But why can’t they be like in the supermarket where they just accept a visual check if you are clearly over 18. I don’t see why Amazon drivers can’t do the same.

“She is elderly so this obviously disturbed her a bit. People that age get anxious when things don’t go to plan.

“I guess we’ll get a refund now and I’ll have to buy her the sherry and drop it off myself.”

One internet user commented: “They don’t have a choice. Amazon are being really strict with the delivery guys at the moment. It’s a disciplinary if they don’t get it. Age doesn’t matter.”

Another wrote: “As a delivery driver myself, we only have to be confident that the customer is over 25 (we have think 25 policy for everything), if they look younger, we ask for ID. The only time we’ll refuse to deliver alcohol to someone who is clearly old enough, is if we suspect it’s being given or sold to under 18s.”

A third said: “I don’t blame the Amazon drivers, they got a duty to deliver the product and have to obliged by strict rules otherwise they can lose their contract and thus their job. However, Amazon should be ashamed of themselves for their over exaggerating security.”
