Dr Deborah Birx has revealed in a new documentary that she had a ‘very uncomfortable’ phone call with former president Donald Trump.
The August 2020 phone call came after she warned the press about the severity of the coronavirus pandemic.
In an interview with CNN’s Chief Medical Correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta for the ‘COVID WAR: The Pandemic Doctors Speak Out’ documentary, Birx said: “It was a CNN report in August that got horrible pushback.”
Birx, who was working on Trump’s Covid-19 response team at that time, continued: “I got called by the President. It was very uncomfortable, very direct and very difficult to hear.”
When Gupta asked if the former president threatened her during the phone call, Birx deflected and said: “I would say it was a very uncomfortable conversation.”
The documentary will air on CNN this Sunday at 9 pm.
In August, Birx told CNN’s ‘State of the Union’ host, Dana Bash, about the severity of the spread of coronavirus. He warned that the country was entering a ‘new phase’ of the pandemic as the US saw a more widespread number of cases.
Birx said in the interview: “What we are seeing today is different from March and April. It is extraordinarily widespread. It’s into the rural as equal urban areas.”
Meanwhile, Trump insisted that the US had done a great job of containing the virus as he vowed to end restrictions and lockdowns.
In the video with Gupta, Birx said that Covid-19 deaths should’ve been less. “I look at it this way – the first time we have an excuse. There were about a hundred thousand deaths that came from the original surge.
“All of the rest of them, in my mind, could have been mitigated or decreased substantially.”
