Douglas Emhoff has revealed that he fell in love with Kamala Harris “at first sight” when the couple met back in 2013.
As the Second Gentleman insisted in his GQ op-ed, he knew that he was in love the moment he laid his eyes on Harris during a blind date.
“The moment I met Kamala, I knew I was in love,” the 56-year-old wrote as he recalled the beginnings of his relationship with the current vice president.
“Not just because of who she is—the warm, funny, and compassionate woman who grounds our family—but also because of the deep resolve with which she fights for the causes she believes in.”
According to the second gentleman, who met Harris back in 2013, the campaign trail only strengthened their relationship by bringing them closer to each other.
“I found that as I began dipping my toe into Kamala’s world, it brought us even closer together. I realized how much of yourself you leave on the trail, how much these stories weigh on you, and—though I couldn’t imagine it possible before this—I grew to understand and admire who she is and what she’s been able to accomplish even more,” he added.
Following their blind date in 2013, the couple tied the knot in 2014. Throughout the year, the couple remained strong, whereas Emhoff continued to support his wife’s political decisions.
Speaking of his new position as the second gentleman, Emhoff said that he knows he won’t be the last.
“It reminds me of a story Kamala likes to tell about her mother Shyamala, who would always say to her daughters, ‘You may be the first, but you better not be the last,’” he added.
“I want that to be true of me, too. I may be the first Second Gentleman, but I know I won’t be the last.”
Emhoff’s big revelation comes as he and his family moved into Blair House, their new temporary home which is located just across the street from the White House where Joe and Jill Biden have settled in.
The 14-bedroom home, which is commonly also known as the president’s guest house, typically serves as a guest house for foreign visitors of the president, whereas the vice presidents normally stay at the Naval Observatory which is located some three miles away from the White House.
Since the Number One Observatory Circle is undergoing renovation following VP Mike Pence’s stay at the property, however, Harris and Emhoff have made Blair House their new home.
The 14-bedroom property is comprised of four connected townhouses and was bought by the government back in 1942. It comes complete with historic furnishings, a massive library, and a total of 119 rooms which occupy over 60,000 square feet – more than the White House which comes with 55,000 square feet of floor area.
