41-year-old Martin Sampson from Brockenhurst, New Forest, Hampshire, and his family were shocked when a jenny wandered on their drive and unexpectedly went into labor.
The family was just sitting in their kitchen as the she-ass appeared. A group of several donkeys also accompanied her. Then, she lied down and gave birth to her foal within the next 30 minutes. All of this happened right next to Martin’s car.
Two hours after Jenny gave birth; the foal struggled to make his first steps. Then, he managed to leave the driveway together with the group of donkeys.
According to the neighbors, another donkey was born at the exact same spot ten years ago. They are now wondering if the jenny that came to give birth here is the same one that was born on their driveway those ten years ago.
“It was my five-year-old daughter Ellie who spotted what was happening at first. She noticed that the donkey was pregnant,” Martin said.
“There were five or six other donkeys that were hanging around outside the driveway, as if they were checking it was a safe place to give birth. When we saw that she was going into labour we left some food outside for her for energy. She wasn’t in any pain at all during the birth,” he continued.
“After the birth, some of the other donkeys began wailing very loudly. We think they were trying to warn off other animals that there had been a birth here.”
“Watching the baby try to walk was incredible. After two hours of trying to get up and falling over she finally was able to walk and the mother took her up the road to graze,” Martin recalled.
There are more than 6,000 members of cattle and donkeys owned by New Forest residents with grazing rights. For that reason, they are allowed to wander freely around the New Forest and have become a part of the community.
