A family dog named Charlie nearly died after vets discovered 117 hair ties in his stomach.

The two-year-old fell seriously ill and his 40-year-old owner Jenee Clayton rushed him to the Westridge Animal Hospital after he started vomiting and stopped eating or drinking.

Jenee, who is a Dental hygienist, said: “I have three kids, but we always joke that Charlie is my fourth. He is involved in every aspect of our lives and is a major part of our family.”

“A few months ago, he woke up in the middle of the night like he wanted to throw up. He made a sort of purging sound, but nothing came up. I didn’t think much of it as he went straight back to sleep. About a month later he did the same thing, by making that purging sound.”

“But then one night he woke up in the middle of the night and vomited multiple times. He wasn’t eating and wasn’t drinking any water, so we took him straight into the vet.”

The family’s vet Dr. Randall Murray performed emergency surgery and found 117 hair ties weighing 2lbs from his stomach.

He also had a few candy wrappers and a teddy bear’s ear in his stomach.

The family was left shocked and couldn’t believe he had consumed so many hair ties which Jenee and her two daughters use daily.

They didn’t even notice the missing hair ties as they get lost every day and they don’t think much of it.

The family is now warning how dangerous it could be to leave things like hair ties and wrappers in the house, especially when you have a dog.

The family has now become more careful and avoids leaving such things in the house.

Jenee said: “Now that we know that hair ties are his ‘fetish’ we take so many precautions. If we take a hair tie out, we put it up high now so he can’t get them. The doctor gave us a 50/50 chance of him making it. We didn’t know if he was going to pull through.”

Thankfully, Charlie survived and is now recovering.

“We were all so distraught about it, everyone was crying. We’re so happy that he is back to normal. He is a total sweetheart and very loving dog. We are just so grateful that he is still here. He means the world to us. We love Charlie so much”, she added.
