A family is praising their recently adopted pooch, Edgar, after he stopped a child abduction attempt in the middle of the night.
40-year-old Thom Lambert said to Fox 43 that their 4-year-old rescue dog frightened a man police officers believe to be Thomas Dewald, 20, away from their house.
Dewald was already accused of kidnapping another child and stuffed her in a wooden trunk at his grandmother’s house. Fortunately, the girl managed to escape.
Speaking about the rescue, Lambert told Fox43: “It was like a growl-howl. It was obvious he was really upset and as soon as I got him to quit barking, I heard sounds of someone going down the stairs.”
The father said he immediately went downstairs to check what was going on when he noticed the door and kitchen window were open. He told Pennlive.com that he ran back upstairs to check on his three daughters who were peacefully asleep in their beds before calling the police.
“The dog started barking and woke up the homeowner and scared away Dewald. That dog potentially saved the little girls’ lives,” Pennsylvania State Trooper Megan Frazer told PEOPLE. “The dog is a hero.”
She added: “It is scary.”
Frazer said Deward admitted to breaking into Lamberts’ house. “When they interviewed Dewald, he admitted to picking out that house because he knew there were young children in there.”
Dewald was arrested and charged with attempted kidnapping in the Lambert case. He was also charged with numerous felony counts including false imprisonment, burglary, kidnapping, criminal trespass, and unlawful restraint.
Lambert told Fox43: “Without Edgar, genuinely, who knows where our daughters would be right now.
“Our family was one hundred percent rescued by our dog that we rescued.
“He’s just the biggest goofball ever. I was like, of course it would be this huge, like, dumb-dumb pain in the butt that would save our children’s lives.”
