Dog The Bounty Hunter could reportedly face severe charges or even jail time should he hold anyone against their will.
As the manhunt for Brian Laundrie continues, Duane Chapman remains active in tracking down the fugitive and searching for evidence that could indicate his whereabouts.
As DailyMail.com has now revealed, however, Dog can not personally detain or arrest the fugitive should he ever cross paths with him.
According to the publication, the TV star isn’t licensed as a private investigator or a bounty hunter in Florida or any other state for that matter.
This means that Mr. Chapman is not permitted to hold anyone, including the missing fugitive, against their will. While citizen’s arrest allows people to detain people breaking the law, it can only be applied if the offender is committing the crime at the time of the arrest.
Since Dog is not licensed to detain or arrest people, he cannot legally hold Brian Laundrie as he is no more than a civilian who joined the manhunt. The same, however, can’t be said for members of his team provided they are licensed to hunt fugitives.
Should he ever track down Laundrie and attempt to hold him against his will on his own, Dog the Bounty Hunter could face false imprisonment and kidnapping charges.
Due to his lack of licensing stemming from the first-degree murder conviction following his participation in a 1976 drug deal gone wrong, Dog doesn’t have the authority to bear arms or make arrests. This could be one of the reasons why he recently teamed up with an undercover law enforcement agent.
As Chapman revealed, he had already received thousands of tips that could lead to the arrest of Laundrie. He also submitted what is believed to be evidence linked to the fugitive to the FBI just recently.
