A group of medics illegally harvested their patients’ organs and sold them for money.
Six people have been imprisoned in China after they were caught illegally selling organs on the black market.
All ranking high in state-run hospitals in Bengpu city, the convicted doctors reportedly convinced the victims’ families to sign fake organ-donating documents.
The doctors then put the bodies in a fake ambulance where they harvested kidneys and livers, a Shanghai-based news website The Paper reported.
Organs of at least 11 patients who died of cerebral hemorrhages or car accidents were sold for cash.
Their crimes were only discovered after Shi Xianglin claimed that his mother’s kidney and liver had been ‘donated’ without her consent.
He immediately realized that something was not right when he could not find his mother’s name in the official organ donor register.
Shi then alerted health and legal authorities.
According to reports, the medics were convicted of damaging corpses and were sentenced to 10 to 28 months.
Doctors Lu Sen and Huang Xinli, who led the surgical operations, had previously worked an organ procurement for their hospitals.
Lu was sentenced to one year in jail, while Huang was handed two years and four months.
Another doctor, Wang was jailed for two years and doctor Yang Suxon would spend two years and two months.
The owner of the fake ambulance, Ou Yang, and the supplier of medical equipment, Huang Chaoyang, received 13 and 10 months in jail.
