A top ER doctor dedicated to saving lives of COVID-19 patients in New York took her own life shortly after opening up to her family about experiencing trauma related to seeing numerous patients die.
According to the reports, Dr. Lorna M. Breen worked as the medical director of the NewYork-Presbyterian Allen Hospital’s ER department.
Prior to her death, the 49-year-old doctor opened up about the trauma associated with seeing a number of patients die from the novel coronavirus in front of her eyes.
After Dr. Breen contracted coronavirus herself, she stopped working for one week and a half before returning to her job.
After the NewYork-Presbyterian Allen Hospital sent the hardworking doctor back home, Breen relocated to Charlottesville, Virginia, where she was supposed to fully recover under the supervision of her dad.
Days after returning home, however, the doctor was rushed to the hospital after attempting to take her own life.
“The victim was taken to U.V.A. Hospital for treatment, but later succumbed to self-inflicted injuries,” spokesman Tyler Hawn said in an interview with the New York Times.
As Dr. Philip C. Breen, the victim’s father, said after the tragic passing, his daughter opened up about the suffering she’d been going through while on the frontlines just days before she took her life.
“She tried to do her job, and it killed her. She was truly in the trenches of the front line,” the heartbroken father told the Times.
As Dr. Breen added, he noticed something was off with his daughter despite her having no history of mental problems.
“Make sure she’s praised as a hero, because she was. She’s a casualty just as much as anyone else who has died,” he added.
