While in mid-flight, the stewards took notice of Faraco’s condition and asked the passengers if anyone was a doctor.

Fortunately for the young man, Dr. Mikhail Varshavski, also known as Doctor Mike on YouTube, stood up and treated Matt with a solution he found in the first aid kit. Following the drug’s admission, Matt’s allergic reaction cooled down and he was able to breathe again.

Days later, Faraco was administered to a hospital where the doctors concluded that a tick bite left him with a severe allergy to meat which resulted in the man falling into a shock during the long-haul flight.

“When he first came up to me, he told me he had steroids and Benadryl, which I recommended he take first,” Doctor Mike recalled after the flight.

As he went on to explain, there was no EpiPen, an auto-injector, on the plane, which is why he had to make use of a large needle to inject Matt with epinephrine, a drug commonly used to counter allergic reactions.

“The only problem is it’s not dosed for an anaphylactic shock and you could easily mistakenly double or triple the dosage,” the 29-year-old doctor admitted. “It could be toxic to him, to the heart, and it could give him a heart attack.”

Following the incident, Dr. Varshavski warned airlines about the need to be equipped with an EpiPen on all flights.

“I can’t believe on airplanes, which is an enclosed space and food is being shared, that there is not an EpiPen,” the doctor expressed.

“I had to take time to sit and read the instructions, break off the plastic cover on top of the needle, while an EpiPen is made to be used very quickly and that’s something a lay person can give.”
