Top Neurologist Claimed Gender Dysphoria Isn’t Caused At Birth And Can Be Treated

A top neurologist has spoken out and claimed that gender dysphoria isn’t caused at birth as many experts have suggested in recent years.

According to Dr. Stephen Gliske of the University of Michigan, people aren’t born with gender dysphoria and gender reassignment surgeries could be avoided with proper treatment.

As the scientist continued, the condition which results in a person believing that their preferred gender doesn’t match their biological sex is caused by abnormalities in brain activity rather than the differences in the size of the brain as previously believed.

According to Gliske, gender dysphoria could be a result of changes in brain activity caused by triggers such as childhood trauma or stress.

Assuming that this is true, Gliske suggested that the condition could be medically treated without gender reassignment. However, he failed to explain how exactly that would be done.

The neurologist’s comments were met with mixed responses, whereas the supporters said avoiding gender reassignment surgeries would be more practical while the critics have accused Gliske of branding gender dysphoria as a disease that has to be treated.

“The bed nucleus of the stria terminalis (BNST) was found to have a smaller average size in male-to-female (MtF) transgender individuals, with a size more similar to that of an average cisgender female than cisgender male,” Gliske wrote in his piece for eNeuro in which he objected past theories on gender dysphoria.

“[My] theory proposes that gender dysphoria is not merely due to static changes in anatomy, as in the previous opposite brain sex theory, but instead includes dynamic activity on interacting, functional networks.

“Changes in sex hormones due to puberty (or aging) could also affect these identified networks, explaining both resolution without treatment in childhood onset causes and the possibility of late-onset cases.”
