A heart-warming video has emerged that shows doctor dressed up as Chewbacca telling a 15-year-old boy that he is getting a new heart.
15-year-old Austin Eggelston, from Pontiac, Ill, was born with three congenital heart defects.
In November, his health deteriorated and was told he needed a heart transplant as soon as possible.
He was transferred to Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago and instantly developed a close bond with a cardiologist, Dr. Philip Thrush.
Austin and Dr. Philip were huge fans of Chewbacca.
Dr. Phillip Thrush promised Austin that when a heart became available, he would dress up as Chewbacca to deliver the good news.
A few months later, when Austin saw Dr. Phillip Thrush entering his hospital room wearing a Chewbacca costume, he was on cloud nine.
His reaction was priceless!
Kathleen Keenan – a spokesperson at the hospital – said: “Austin just knew right away. It was really, really special”.
“They (patients) have a lot of fun on the floor. Since kids wait so long for a heart, the doctors try to make their stay here more palatable, so they really get close with the families in the unit,” Keenan said.
The heartwarming video was shared online and left everyone in tears. One user wrote: ‘That actually made me cry. Happy for the kid.’
Another said: ‘This is beautiful. Thank god for things like this!’ while the third one added: ‘God bless this child. May the force be with you buddy!’
One user said: ‘God bless! This almost made me cry’ while another wrote: ‘I hope he lives a long healthy life’.
His reaction was amazing! It brought tears to everyone’s eyes.
Austin is doing well and recovering. He got a second chance at life and we wish he lives a long happy life.
