The Immigration and Customs Enforcement revealed the results of a pilot study in which the authorities confirmed around 30% of migrants claiming to have familial ties with children they brought with them are biologically not related to them.
The ICE pilot was carried out in McAllen and El Paso, Texas, with shocking results suggesting thousands of people faked familial relationships and had children who were not their own in their custody.
According to the officials behind the trial, the 30% didn’t consist of cases of adoptive parents or step-parents. “Those were not the case. In these cases, they are misrepresented as family members,” they confirmed.
While the ICE officials wouldn’t reveal how many families got tested or how they were selected, they confirmed that some migrants refused the testing and admitted they weren’t related to ‘their’ children.
As they added, the results were handed over to the Department of Homeland Security who will investigate the matter and determine whether to apply the rapid DNA testing method on a wider scale.
Following the backlash Trump’s administration received after attempting to enforce ‘family separation’ last year, the law continues to allow illegal migrants with children to apply for asylum and evade lengthy detention. Since then, the number of alleged families arriving at the border has increased drastically.
According to the US Border Patrol, the authorities were already forced to deal with over 530,000 migrants who crossed the border illegally in this year alone.
As a result of the massive pressure on the processing system, over 40,000 of them have already been distributed through communities.
In response to the escalating migration crisis, Trump administration recently announced that $2.9 billion in emergency funding requested just weeks before the announcement most likely won’t be enough to deal with the situation at hand.
