An Immigration and Customs Enforcement pilot of new rapid DNA testing at the border has discovered that the tested children were not biologically related to their parents in their custody.
According to Washington Examiner, an officer told them that ICE conducted the pilot for a few days earlier this month in El Paso and McAllen, Texas, where they found that 30 per cent of the tested lied about to be the biological parents of the children.
‘’Those were not the case. In these cases, they are misrepresented as family members,’’ the official said.
It is not clear whether every family unit was tested during the pilot or only those people who picked up any type of red flag. The ICE spokesman did not respond immediately to the request for comment.
The official said that when some migrants got to know about the test they refused to do it as they knew it would be subjected to DNA proof and they can’t prove it because they are not their biological parents.
ICE said that the Department of Homeland Security will look at the results of the pilot so that it can be ascertained whether the DNA tests should be implemented more widely or not.
The current US law and policy means Central Americans who illegally cross the border with children can claim asylum and in most cases can avoid any longer custody.
US Border Patrol says it has arrested 535,000 illegally across the border so far this year, in which ‘no sign of it getting better.’
The agency said that due to heavy pressures on the processing system, 40 of them have been released in the communities.
Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar said in a separate letter, ‘’could grow further and be closer to the worst-case scenario HHS had proposed be the basis for the supplemental request, which was $1.4 billion higher.’’
