Tokyo Disneyland has been closed down for business amid coronavirus outbreak that has already resulted in over 200 confirmed infections in Japan.
As the company revealed, they will likely reopen for business on March 16, “but we will contact closely with the relevant administrative organs and will inform you again.”
The decision means that currently both Disneyland and DisneySea parks in Tokyo are closed.
The preventive measures were taken as over 200 cases of coronavirus infections were recorded in the country. The number excludes hundreds of patients who contracted the killer bug while cruising on the Diamond Princess.
Previously, in January, Disney had also closed theme parks in Shanghai and Hong Kong as the deadly virus was spreading throughout China.
As the parks’ officials confirmed at the time, they’re expecting to lose some $280 million due to the 2-month closure of Hong Kong and Shanghai Disneyland parks.
The company’s decision to close Tokyo Disneyland followed shortly after the Japanese prime minister has ordered the closure of all schools across the nation to prevent the spread of the deadly coronavirus.
“The government considers the health and safety of children above anything else,” Shinzo Abe said.
“We request all primary, junior high and high schools… across the nation to close temporarily from March 2 next week until their spring break.”
Over 200 Japanese have contracted the killer virus and several have passed away. In Hokkaido, 13 new cases were confirmed, including two young children, according to the public broadcaster NHK.
Osaka officials have already ordered the temporary closure of all schools in the city and around 1,600 schools were also set to close in Hokkaido after an 80-year-old man with lung and heart diseases passed away from coronavirus.
