Disney Rebrands And Thus Ends The 20th Century Fox Brand


20th Century Fox, one of the most iconic and recognized brand of movies and TV shows, has become history.

Disney, which owns most of the assets, announced that their 20th Century Fox Television will be rebranded as just 20th Television, dropping the Century and Fox.

After acquiring 20th Century Fox last year with a $71 billion deal, Disney has worried that the Fox aspect of the brands name may cause confusion to viewers. The brand is in no ways related to the Fox Corporation which owns Fox News, Fox Entertainment and Fox Sports.

Thus, the house of mouse decided that it needed to rebrand one of the biggest names in TV and movie history. Earlier this year in January, 20th Century Fox films was renamed to just 20th Century.

Although the iconic music and the logo stayed the same, the new title card has been changed accordingly. Disney has assured viewers that they will not alter the title cards for older productions, and said that the new title cards for the TV production will be used starting this fall season.

Craig Hunegs, who is charge of the television side at Disney, said that the rebranding marks the true integration of the iconic brand into the Disney corporation. He argued that the changing of the name is a great way to combine the heritage and Disney’s creativity.

Other TV studios under the Disney flag went through a similar rebranding process. The two remaining studios of ABC have been combined together as ABC Signature, while Fox 21 Television Studio was completely renamed as Touchstone Television.

The iconic 20th Century Fox brand is thus no more. It was created in 1935 when Twentieth Century Pictures merged with Fox Films. Since its merging, some of the most iconic movies of all time began with the signature title card, which has become synonymous with movie watching for some.

From “Star Wars”, often hailed as the true American classic, to perennial family favorites “Sound of Music” along with Christmas classics such as “Die Hard” and “Home Alone”, the fanfare to 20th Century Fox’s title card opened the curtains to many beloved films.

The TV side of the company was also significant. Most notably, the television studio produced “The Simpsons”, widely regarded as one of the quintessential TV shows as well as the equally loved “Modern Family”.
