A 64-year-old mother, from Bridge of Weir, Renfrewshire, has revealed how she was attacked and abused by a woman after she parked on disabled parking space.
Alison Wilson, who suffers from ankylosing spondylitis that causes her chronic pain and she struggles to walk sometimes, was told by a woman ‘disabled people can’t have kids’ after she used a disabled parking space.
The furious woman damaged Alison’s car and abused her in front of her kids who were left terrified.
Alison told she parked her car, which had a blue badge, on disabled parking space and when a woman spotted her car, she was left furious.
She slammed her car door into Alison’s car to damage it and hurled abuses.
The woman even said ‘disabled people can’t have kids’ after noticing toys in the car.
Alison told Daily Record: “I’m not often speechless but I couldn’t believe it, she was so angry. But she said that the car shouldn’t be parked there because there were toys and a car seat in the back and disabled people can’t have kids.”
Alison let her go and didn’t call the police because she was shocked and just wanted to hide away.
However, now she wishes she had reported her to the police.
This was not the first time when someone attacked and abused Alison because of her illness.
She told Daily Record how once she was told to stay at home by a stranger because of her illness.
Alison said: “I once spent hours getting ready just for someone to say ‘you shouldn’t be out you should be in a home.’”
“I was so proud of myself getting over the door just to be shouted at by someone I’ve never even seen before, it was heartbreaking.”
Alison said she was left heartbroken after a stranger shouted at her and she didn’t do anything.
This kind of behaviour should be reported to the police as Assistant Chief Constable Gary Ritchie, Police Scotland strategic lead for Partnerships, Prevention and Community Wellbeing said disability hate crimes are unacceptable.
He told Daily Record: “Our message to everyone – whether they’ve been a victim of hate crime, or witnessed it – is this: don’t tolerate hate.”
