Diners in China could be fined for not finishing their food orders in restaurants in the near future.
According to the reports, Chinese lawmakers have drafted a law that would allow restaurant owners to fine their customers for not finishing the food they ordered in an attempt to reduce the amount of food waste generated.
The proposal is a part of President Xi’s campaign that focuses on reducing food waste throughout the country.
While it is unclear how much the fines would amount to, the restaurant could, under the new law, impose “leftover cleaning fees” on diners who “generate obvious waste.”
The draft also aims to penalize restaurants that “mislead” or “lure” customers into ordering more food than they actually need. According to the reports, restaurants guilty of deceitful tactics could be fined up to more than $1,500.
In addition to the fines, restaurants will also be asked to display signs urging diners not to waste food. Under the new law, waiters will also be tasked with verbally reminding the diners about the anti-food waste regulations.
The changes to eating habits will also affect various bloggers and content producers who might face fines for promoting overeating in their videos and pictures.
As the deputy director of the NPC Standing Committee’s Legislative Affairs Commission confirmed, the purpose of the changes is to “restrict business dining and regulate the business conduct of dining service providers and takeaway platforms.”
Xu Anbiao reportedly also claimed that the changes will promote a healthier lifestyle.
“The waste problem is like an illness that still exists and happens again and again. It has been a big complaint among the public, while some NPC deputies and political advisers also suggested that we should take legal measures to curb food waste,” he said according to China Daily.
