President Joe Biden’s Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas sent a message to migrants on Sunday morning.
He told ‘Meet the Press’ of NBC: “Our message has been straightforward and simple, and it’s true – The border is closed. We are expelling families. We are expelling single adults.
“I think we are executing on our plans and, quite frankly, when we are finished doing so, the American public will look back on this and say we secured our border and we upheld our values and our principles as a nation.”
Mayorkas also claimed that President Biden ‘inherited’ a broken system from the former administration.
Stephen Miller, Trump’s longtime aid, told Fox News: “I was stunned by the dishonesty of Mayorkas’ presentation. He looked at the camera and he lied. He blatantly lied. And there’s just no polite way to put that.
“And so, when Mayorkas says, as he did today, that the border is closed, he is lying.”
The aide then went on to claim that unaccompanied minors are relocated, whereas adults and family units face alternatives to detention or a complete release from custody.
“That is not a closed border,” Miller expressed, adding that ATD is “a fancy way of saying: ‘You’re going free.’”
“So we have an open border right now in this country,” he said.
During his interviews, Mayorkas also said that the administration is committed to not turning away unaccompanied children who arrived at the border.
He told NBC host Chuck Todd: “We’ve made a decision that we will not expel young, vulnerable children.”
His remarks come as the number of unaccompanied minors in US custody reached more than 15,000.
“Are you concerned that the word will go out, and you’ll get unaccompanied minors from all over the world trying to come to our southern border” Todd asked the DHS chief.
Mayorkas then said: “We are safely processing the children who do come to our border.
“We strongly urge, and the message is clear, not to do so now. I cannot overstate the perils of the journey that they take.”
He said of the unaccompanied children who arrived: “Regrettably, I am all too aware of the tragedies that have occurred and continued to occur along that journey.”
