Kellie Chauvin, the spouse of the disgraced police officer Derek Chauvin, has filed for divorce after the former cop has been arrested and charged with the murder of George Floyd.
According to an Insider report, Kellie’s lawyer confirmed the divorce plans and insisted that his client is “devastated” by the incident.
“This evening, I spoke with Kellie Chauvin and her family.
She is devastated by Mr.
Floyd’s death and her utmost sympathy lies with his family, with his loved ones and with everyone who is grieving this tragedy. She has filed for dissolution of her marriage to Derek Chauvin,” the attorney said according to Insider. As the report went on to suggest, the attorney explained that Kellie “has no children from her current marriage” and that she is requesting for her family, including her children from a previous relationship, to “be given safety and privacy during this difficult time.
”
The filing for the divorce followed shortly after Derek Chauvin has been arrested and charged with third-degree murder and manslaughter of George Floyd who died shortly after passing out while the fired police officer was kneeling him.
“Please, please, please, I can’t breathe. Don’t kill me,” Floyd was heard crying out as Chauvin was pressing his knee against the man’s neck while he was handcuffed and lying face down.
Following the man’s unwarranted death, protesters around the country have been gathering to demand justice and speak up against police brutality.
After Chauvin’s arrest, Floyd’s family insisted that the officer should be charged with first-degree murder.
“The arrest of former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin for the brutal killing of George Floyd is a welcome but overdue step on the road to justice. We expected a first-degree murder charge. We want a first-degree murder charge,” Ben Crump, the family’s lawyer, said according to Insider.
“And we want to see the other officers arrested. We call on authorities to revise these charges to reflect the true culpability of this officer. The pain that the black community feels over this murder and what it reflects about the treatment of black people in America is raw and is spilling out on to the streets across America.”
