When your father is the award-winning actor Denzel Washington, you are probably going to be called ‘Denzel Washington’s son.

But 34-year-old John David Washington also has a mom, so he brilliantly shut down a Today show reporter after the interviewer unintentionally ignored his mother.
While talking to John David about his role in the new film, BlacKkKlansman, the reporter said: “Being the son of Denzel Washington….”
The Monster and Men star then proceeded to inform the interviewer about the incredible achievements of his mom, Pauletta Washington, who has been married to his father for over 30 years.
John David immediately interjected: “And Pauletta Washington. [She] was earning more money than he was before they got married. She was on Broadway working and she paid for the first date, paid the bill, paid for the cab ride.”
He also added calmly: “She’s a classically-trained pianist, went to Julliard. She’s a great artist in her own right and I learned a lot from her. My father taught me how to hunt, my mother taught me how to love.”
Denzel also hasn’t been quiet about his three-decade partnership with his love either. He has been married to Pauletta for 35 years and he has spoken highly of his wife in numerous interviews.
In an interview with People, he shared the secrets to their happy marriage. Denzel said:
“I do what I’m told. I keep my mouth shut […] You can buy a house, but that doesn’t make it a home – and not to say a man can’t make a home a home, but my wife has made our house a home, and raised these beautiful kids [John David, 34, Katia, 30, twins Olivia and Malcolm, 27] and protected them and sacrificed for them, she did the heavy-lifting.”
But in an interview with Jimmy Kimmel, Denzel jokingly said: “I actually paid for the first date.”
