A Democratic senator has issued an apology after a group of his supporters staged a mock assassination of Donald Trump during his fundraiser.
In one of the disturbing images, a man is seen pointing a machine gun at a man wearing Trump’s mask, while in another, 55-year-old Senator Martin Sandoval is seen standing next to the person who previously staged the mock attack.
After the photos went viral, the Republicans, as well as plenty of Democrats, have been left outraged by the mock assassination and pointed out that joking about murdering someone is not acceptable under any conditions.
“As our nation grapples with the epidemic of gun violence, purposely pointing a fake gun at anyone is insensitive and wrong,” Democratic Gov. J.B. Pritzker slammed the mock assassination.
“I condemn actions like the ones displayed in the pictures because they lack the civility our politics demands.”
Following the backlash, the Democratic senator in question apologized, but not everyone believed that his apology came from the heart.
“I don’t condone violence toward the President or anyone else. I apologize that something like this happened at my event,” Mr. Sandoval expressed after his fundraiser backfired.
“The apology from Sen. Sandoval for the detestable pictures from his event depicting an assassination of President Trump is too little, too late,” Tim Schneider of the Illinois Republican Party stated.
“Dangerous imagery like this will be condemned and seen as inappropriate by people of sound mind; however, a mentally unstable individual who wants to harm President Trump might find them as an inspiration.
“It’s inexcusable for an elected official to allow the promotion of violence in any way. If the individual pictured is a staffer or volunteer, they should be terminated immediately.”
