Ellen DeGeneres became the subject of trolls after she compared isolation to being in prison.
The 62-year-old host is reportedly self-isolating in her $450million (£363m) mansion with her wife Portia de Rossi.
She is still hosting her The Ellen DeGeneres Show, from her home in California. While making the prison remark, she was sitting on her comfy sofa and her aesthetically pleasing garden area can also be seen in the background.
Ellen said: ‘’This is like being in jail, is what it is. Mostly because I’ve been the same clothes for 10 days and everyone in here is gay.’’
Her comment didn’t go well with many social media users and they slammed her for the same.
One Twitter user wrote: ‘’People are literally dying in jail from COVID-19 while Ellen is out here making jokes about it,’ as Variety TV critic Caroline Framke added: ‘What a great look for Ellen as thousands of people sit in actual jail cells just hoping for the best without soap and basic protections.
Another added: ‘’Incarceration is leading to mass death in this pandemic. Also, I think by ‘gay,’ what y’all are referring to is actually often called rape in jail/prison. Maybe think of comparing life in your mansion to something else?’’
Ellen tried to cover up her humor thanking her staff and crew, ‘’The best thing I can do is keep the show on the air.’’ If you’re feeling down I want to lift you up, if you’re feeling trapped I want to set you free.’’
She said that she was trying to cheer everyone up by adding little humor during this tough time. She added: ‘‘I feel bad for a lot of people…but I want to spread light where it’s gloomy. I want to stick a candle where the sun doesn’t shine.’’
