A deaf man visits a local Starbucks in Leesburg, Virginia three times a week.

Ibby Piracha’s order is usually a caramel Frappuccino.

Even though his face is already familiar to Starbucks employees, Piracha still types his order on his mobile phone and shows it to the cashier.

But on February 19, he was surprised by barista Krystal Payne who greeted him in sign language. Payne also handed him a note before taking his order.

After reading it, he looked at her. “What do you want to drink?” she asked Piracha in sign language.

The note read: “I’ve been learning ASL just so you can have the same experience as everyone else.”

Payne had been studying hours of videos on YouTube just to expand her basic knowledge of American Sign Language and learn more sentences or phrases.

“I was quite impressed,” Piracha said. “I was very inspired that she was very motivated to learn sign on her own.”

“She became more motivated to learn sign because I was customer there and that has really, really touched me.”

Overwhelmed by her kindness, Piracha shared a photo of the note on Facebook. He wrote: “The note made me happy. I felt happy that she learned to sign ASL to speak to me. I felt happy that she wrote the note.”

The post quickly went viral and Piracha hopes for people to realize “the hearing world and the [deaf world] are trying to communicate.”

Payne said: “My job is to make sure people have the experience they expect and that’s what I gave him.”
