One person has died and several have been left injured after massive supermarket shelves collapsed in a domino effect in a supermarket in Brazil.
The incident happened in São Luís, Brazil, where a series of shelves at Mateus Atacarejo Mix Supermarket came crashing down upon shoppers and store workers in a domino effect.
According to the reports, eight people were injured and one died as the loaded shelves started toppling onto each other at around 8.15 in the evening.
The deceased victim was later identified as 21-year-old Elane de Oliveira Rodrigues, a staff member who was stacking shelves at the supermarket at the time of the accident.
While two other victims only suffered minor injuries, six had to be rushed to the hospital where they received further treatment.
According to the reports, all six hospitalized shoppers and store workers have already been released from the hospital.
Following the tragic incident, people have been caught on camera clearing the area of debris in an attempt to reach the trapped victims.
They were soon joined by a series of paramedics, firefighters, and police officers who worked the night searching for survivors in the rubble.
The search and rescue mission, which reportedly involved nearly three hundred firefighters, officially came to an end on Saturday morning following 11 hours of hard work.
Paying respects to Rodrigues after her passing was the young store worker’s cousin, Ruan Alysson, who said that the 21-year-old “was so happy with her new job because she had just started working as a shelf stacker for the company three months ago.”
“The last picture she took of herself on her phone, in her blue work t-shirt, was on the shop floor,” Alysson told the local media.
Following the accident, an investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the deadly incident.
