A daycare owner has been arrested after a 5-month-old infant was found dead after being left in a scorching van for several hours.
According to the reports, the baby, who has passed away during the ordeal, was left in a van parked outside Jacksonville’s Ewing’s Love & Hope Preschool and Academy from 8 am until 1 pm.
Following the discovery of the lifeless body of the baby girl, 56-year-old Darryl Ewing was arrested and charged with child neglect.
The 5-month-old was found by her own mother who called the daycare staff and asked how her daughter was doing. After the staff told her the girl hadn’t been seen, the worried mum rushed over only to find her daughter dead in the van parked outside the daycare.
“Efforts were made to resuscitate the infant and she was transported to the hospital,” the police revealed in a statement. Despite all efforts to save her life, however, the girl was pronounced dead two hours after being found by her mother.
While no one was arrested in direct connection with the tragic death of the infant, the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office said the daycare would be held responsible for the death of the 5-month-old girl.
As the Department of Children and Families later revealed, Ewing’s daycare “did not notify DCF that they were transporting children. Therefore, transportation standards were not being monitored.”
However, the DCF also stated the daycare wouldn’t be issued an emergency suspension order that would force them to seize all operations.
“Every day, parents entrust child care providers with their most precious gifts. Tragically, today a family has just been notified of the gut-wrenching loss of their precious baby girl,” DCF wrote in a statement.
“DCF immediately opened a joint child death and child care licensing investigation in coordination with law enforcement. We will continue to support this family as they mourn the loss of their baby girl.”
