Sir David Attenborough revealed he was overjoyed when he found out that Donald Trump lost the 2020 election to Joe Biden.
As the 94-year-old broadcaster and historian insisted, the transition of power from Trump to Biden is important not only for the United States but for the entire world.
While President Trump announced that the US was pulling out of the Paris climate agreement back in 2017, Joe Biden vowed to get America committed to the international treaty which aims to counter global warming after he takes office.
“America is the most powerful country in the world, economically, and has huge influence on what happens,” Attenborough said.
“That someone should be coming into power who recognizes the importance of the ecological problems that face us – whose first statement after it became clear he was going to become the President Elect was to reinstate America’s backing of the Paris agreement…
“I can’t remember getting out of my seat and cheering all by myself until that moment.”
Speaking of the moment he jumped out of his seat and punched the air in happiness, the narrator added: “I have never done it before, even for our own elections.”
The 94-year-old’s comments about the US election come shortly after he has come up with another docuseries about our planet. Called ‘A Perfect Planet’, the series will air on BBC One and will address various topics and issues revolving around the weather, biodiversity, and human impacts on the environment.
As Alastair Fothergill, the series’ executive producer, expressed, he believes that the world’s reaction to the coronavirus pandemic provides hope that humanity will also unite when it comes to dealing with the “planetary crisis facing us.”
“We’ve seen how, in the search for the vaccine, humanity has united and put so much energy into solving that problem,” Fothergill said.
“To be honest, Covid is a relatively small problem compared with the planetary crisis facing us. So if humanity can unite to solve Covid surely we can to solve climate change?”
As Sir David Attenborough hopes, the much-needed change will be led by America once Trump leaves the White House and Biden takes office.
