To make the matters worse for the family, Jane’s daughters were not allowed to see her during her final moments whereas only one member of the family, the senior woman’s son, was allowed in.

“My sisters and I had to pick which of us would be the only one allowed to sit with her which was very difficult. My sister is a social worker so we decided to protect her from infection so chose me instead, but it was all very surreal,” Jane’s son, Alex, revealed.

“When she was in the isolation ward, it was very quiet, very quiet and very calm – almost bizarre. The last time I saw her I had been told by the doctor there was a 100% chance she wasn’t going to make it – then it took me an hour to compose myself before I was ready to go in and see her.

“I got a bit emotional because there was no hope. I said, ‘Have you told my mother?’ and they said, ‘Yes we have, she knows and she wants to see you.’”

As the heartbroken son added, his mother remained strong until the end and even cracked some jokes with him before passing away.

To make sure everyone was able to say goodbye to Jane, Alex also established a call that her daughters and grandkids could participate in.

“We could not hug her goodbye. We couldn’t tell her we loved her for the last time in person. We are in shock because it is so surreal. It feels like numbers until it is there and you experience it,” 22-year-old Molly, Jane’s granddaughter, expressed.

“I will forever be grateful for the love my grandma had for all of us, for the kindness she showed.”
