A father-of-four went viral after he gave a powerful speech about his ‘child who did not smile’ during a meeting in the Missouri state House.
Brandon Boulware introduced himself as a “lifelong Missourian, business lawyer, Christian, and the son of a Methodist minister.”
In the video that has gone viral on social media, Boulware shared his opinion on a resolution that would ban transgender high school athletes from participating in female sports.
“One thing I often hear when transgender issues are discussed is, ‘I don’t get it – I don’t understand,’” Boulware said. “I didn’t get it either. For years, I didn’t get it.”
He said that he forced his daughter to play ‘boy’ toys and cut her hair short even though she identified as a female.
“Why did I do this? To protect my child. … and, truth be told, I did it to protect myself as well. I wanted to avoid those inevitable questions as to why my child did not look and act like a boy.”
He continued: “My child was miserable. I cannot overstate that. She was absolutely miserable. Especially at school.
“No confidence, no friends, no laughter.
“I can honestly say this – I had a child who did not smile.”
His perspective started to change when his daughter asked if she would be allowed to play with other children in the neighborhood if she changed into boys’ clothes.
“And it was then that it hit me. My daughter was equating being good with being someone else,” he said.
“I was teaching her to deny who she is. On that day, my wife and I stopped silencing our child’s spirit.”
