School days were just as stressful as they were fun, especially during the times when exams were the only thing that everyone thought or talked about.

In the case of one teen girl from Wales, however, exams suddenly presented an opportunity for her to earn not only knowledge but also money after her father made a sweet promise.

Molly Rowlands is a 16-year-old Welsh girl and a student of Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhondda, a Welsh-medium secondary school.

As she was talking with her father about her fast-approaching exams, he promised her he would pay £100 ($130) for each A* she would get.

With a smile on her face and determination in her mind, Molly decided to take the challenge very seriously and give it her best shot.

“I never thought I would get anywhere near that number of A*s, it was such a shock to me!” the 16-year-old said.

It was two years ago now and it was a bit of a joke at the time – I had a bit of a shock when I heard,” her dad Clive added.

Molly also explained how acing all 14 subjects required her to put hours and hours of her time into finishing her homework, studying, and doing revisions.

“I revised every evening through the school year but it built up to four-to-five hours around three months before my exams. Yes it’s a relief that it’s over and I’m ready to do it all again for A-levels,” she said.

The teen also expressed gratitude to her friends and teachers who helped her with her studies.

“They’re really proud of me and I’m so lucky to have the best group of friends and such amazing and supportive teachers.

“I certainly couldn’t have done it without them and they deserve so much credit for my results!”

Besides this once-in-a-lifetime achievement, acing all 14 subjects also led to her dad having to pay her £1,400 ($1,820) which Molly intends to save and use “for university fees.”

Speaking about the bet, Molly explained that “it started out as a family joke that soon became a bit of a talking point. It was two years ago before I started my exams.”

She added:

“I was just joking around saying what are you going to give me when I pass – he said £100 for every A*. We were only joking.

“It just shows that I really didn’t know what results I would get. So on results day I was given a card with a blank cheque inside.

“It was just a joke – but a few of my dad’s friends knew about it and kept winding him up. We kept the joke going really.”
