As we know that cycling is good for our health, Ole Kassow, in Denmark started a movement called Cycling Without Age in 2012. The aim was to help the elderly get back on their bicycles, but he was thinking to find a solution to their limited mobility. So, they invented a trishaw and started to give free bike rides to the local nursing home residents. Now, this initiative has become well known and called Cycling Without Age and has spread to across 38 countries around the world.

Many elderly people aren’t mobile anymore. Their family members take them out sometimes, but mostly they use the car to go somewhere. Cycling without age provides the experience of freedom to enjoy nature to the elderly by letting them enjoy rides on the rickshaw.

Some volunteers, like the Dutch Marian, used to take their parents out on a bike and after they can’t do that anymore, they want other people to enjoy the same activity.

The process of Cycling Without Age may be different in every country, but overall someone signs up as a volunteer and then gets trained by a ‘pilot’. This training makes them perfect in handling the rickshaw with a person in it, as it differs quite a bit from biking on a regular bike.

First, they train with an empty rickshaw, then pilot sits in the rickshaw to train them more. After that, their first passenger ride goes along under the guidance of a trained pilot.

Volunteers can pick up the elderly as many times as they want by making appointments ahead of time, or they simply walk into a care home and ask people who want to come for a ride!
