Fiona is a one-year-old cow at an ethical farm in Millbrook, Ontario. As far as farms go, the rolling green pastures surrounded by a forest and ponds full of fresh water that are scattered over the farm’s grounds is as idyllic a setting as one can imagine.
Fiona and other cows like her freely roam through this paradise of a farm with a large bull named Gus protectively watching over his “girls.” They fearlessly go through every corner and are clearly healthy. This speaks volumes about the care that these farmers take in making sure that their cows are raised properly.
As the herd meanders through this idyllic setting, the farmers take their jobs seriously and constantly check on them to make sure everything is in order.point 235 |
Fiona’s friendly nature means that she is often one of the first cows to head over and greet the farmers when they arrive to make their rounds.point 123 | The obvious trust is touching and is a testament to the healthy relationship that the farmers share with the herd.point 218 | 1
One hot summer day, someone a neighbor who lives near the farm decided to fly his drone. He frequently does flybys on the Millbrook farm to get videos and pictures and it’s easy to see why he considers the farm an ideal location to get his footage.
Cows are actually more intelligent than we give them credit for and as the drone was flying around, none other than Fiona was one of the first to take notice. She wasn’t content at looking, though, and wandered even closer to find out what this buzzing and flying device was all about.
Despite her wide and trusting eyes, it was touching to see Fiona approach without fear or apprehension, a testament to her positive experience with humans. The drone operator must have been smiling from ear to ear at the adorable sight.

While this may result in a higher cost of production and consequently, higher end-products, the fact that all of it will be produced while free of cruelty is a salve to many who are aware of what goes on in more commercialized farm operations.point 200 | 1
While those who don’t want to be burdened by the guilt of eating animal meat have often adopted a vegan lifestyle, if you can’t totally give up on meat a little research will reveal that ethical farms such as the one where Fiona lives are actually not that hard to find.
