“We would never know of this woman if she was an individual of color,” added one source. Similarly, they spoke about how Petito keeps popping up in headlines because she was a white influencer with a large fan following.

The 22-year-old was recently pronounced dead after an autopsy report confirmed how a body reportedly found at a park in Wyoming did, in fact, belong to her, adding how the cause of her death was in fact homicide.

While the investigations into the case continue, many critics feel that cases like these tend to overshadow other missing person cases, especially those belonging to individuals who are black or native American.

“She’s receiving all the attention out there for being a pretty white blonde and that’s the truth,” added one Twitter user who fumed over the case’s constant appearance on the news.

Meanwhile, an advocate from Wyoming named Lynnette Grey Bull also took this opportunity to speak about how heartbreaking it was to see someone like Gabby go missing and then receive so much attention from the media in such little time.

She also added that there was a list of missing people of color who have gone missing but there’s no one to ask or document their stories because they’re not white. “They fail to generate a fraction of the attention that’s being given to the Gabby Petito case,” she fumed.
