When a son surprised his elderly parents by converting his basement into their new home so they can live with him, the couple couldn’t hold their tears.

George and Bonnie Miller, both of whom are about 87 years of age, have been blessed with a caring son who knows how to look after his parents.

George had started losing his mental health while Bonnie wasn’t doing well physically.

Their son, Schon, was well aware of their condition and knew that they’d be needing extra care to live well. Putting the couple in a nursing home felt utterly wrong to both Schon and his wife, Jeannie.

Schon and Jeannie wanted to stay together with the elderly couple so they started looking for a house with extra space, something like that of an attached apartment.

They tried really hard but found no luck with a new home in Bremen, Ohio. After going through their options, they finally came up with a brilliant solution.

The Millers’ house had a recreation area in the basement.

It had a karaoke setup and a pool table among other objects. The size of the dark, brooding basement was just perfect to make a living area for Bonnie and George.

So they decided to convert the basement into a living space.

“Making room for in law suite,” the couple wrote on their Facebook account, listing all the contents of their basement for sale. “Must go in a week. Message me for pickup arrangements.”

After selling the objects, the couple made a new entrance, added a small kitchen and a bathroom, lightened the space, and painted the walls with bright colors.

“We had been talking about it with mum for a while because we knew they were leaning on each other with one good body and one good mind,” Schon told The Daily Mail.

“One can’t live alone without the other and we didn’t want either one to end up in a nursing home.

“When mum broke her shoulder falling, we started looking for a house that already had a finished mother-in-law suite.

“But when we couldn’t find anything, we decided to blow a hole in the basement wall, get rid of our fun stuff like the pool table, instruments, and karaoke area and move them in so we could take care of them.”

After converting the space into a comfortable living area, the couple brought their parents to show them their new home.

The senior citizens were crying profusely at the thoughtful and kind gesture of their son. Their reaction couldn’t be described in words.
