A couple surprised the bride’s mother by shaving their heads on their wedding day in a show of solidarity.
20-year-old Alistair and Jony from New Zealand made their dreams come true when they tied the knot in front of their families and friends. Their wedding day, however, was far from the usual and came with a big twist – the couple shaving their heads in front of everyone.
The reason for this dates back to 2018 when Jony’s mother, Luna, was diagnosed with stage 4 ovarian cancer. To prolong her life, Luna had to undergo grueling chemotherapy and lost her hair in the process.
In a show of solidarity, the couple decided to shave their heads on their wedding day and express their support for the 20-year-old’s ailing mother who has since the wedding passed away.
Following the ceremony and the couple’s first dance, the guests were surprised when the MC announced the surprise Jony and Alistair had planned.
After both of their heads were shaved, the wedding guests broke into laughter and tears and went on to celebrate the special event.
“We were so happy to see how happy and proud it made her. We didn’t really know what to expect but we were so happy in the moment,” Jony admitted.
“The responses were very unexpected, everyone at the wedding was crying and telling us how proud they were.
“We have received donations from all around the world which was also very unexpected, and we are so grateful to those who have donated or offered words of support.”
As the couple revealed, they have set up a fundraiser and already managed to raise over $3,000, whereas all of the funds will go to a cancer society.
“My husband, Alistair, and I have recently got married! In honor of my mother and to show our solidarity for those affected by cancer, we shaved our heads and took donations on the night,” Jony explained on her donation page.
“All donations will be going to the Cancer Society. The donations haven’t stopped and we have found our story has hit home for many, not just our families.
“We are so grateful for any and every donation. Everything goes to benefit those in care and research. This is to help all those who have or may be affected by cancer. We have been overwhelmed with the response and are filled with utmost gratitude!”
