A couple of wildlife enthusiasts are known for free-diving with sharks without any protective equipment in an attempt to make people understand that the sea beasts aren’t very dangerous after all.

23-year-old Summer Baumgardner and 29-year-old Will Nace are partners that share a very unusual hobby – free-diving with some of the world’s deadliest predators.

As a part of their hobby, Summer and Will commonly meet up with a wide variety of sharks including bull sharks, hammerheads, and lemon sharks.

While many have branded the couple crazy, the two refuse to let go of their passion and claim that sharks aren’t as dangerous as the majority of people believe.

“There’s so much misunderstanding around sharks, because they’re viewed as big scary apex predators that will eat you. They are apex predators but they’re not there to eat you,” Summer said in an interview with Barcroft TV.

“A lot of it’s social media, the movies… it gives them a bad rep for no reason just entertainment. Once you get to know the species and what they stand for, you get a totally different view on everything.”

As the couple added, they work to promote the conservation of these mighty beasts and aim to educate people about the species.

“It’s a passion of mine educating people about sharks. People don’t understand them; people fear what they don’t understand. Break people of the fear and we might have sharks in 30, 40 years instead of them being extinct,” Will added.

According to Will, one of the couple’s main reasons to work towards the preservation of sharks is to allow future generations, including their 7-month-old daughter Coral, to enjoy the predators as well.

“Summer was five and a half months pregnant and we went shark diving. That was the last time since before she had the baby,” Will added.

“We came back up from one of the dives and she asked me what I thought about the name, Coral. And I was like actually really liked it a lot.”
